WH Reportedly Looking at DREAMers as Bargaining Chip
Several top WH officials want Trump to strike a deal with Congress that offers DREAMers -- the nearly 800,000 young undocumented immigrants currently protected from deportation under the DACA program -- protection in exchange for legislation that would pay for a border wall, fund more detention centers, and lower legal immigration numbers, among other things, reports McClatchy. WH aides pushing for this approach include Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and John Kelly. McClatchy also says that VP Pence and former WH Chief of Staff Reince Priebus support the approach, though others, including AG Jeff Sessions and Stephen Miller, stand against providing any relief to DREAMers. Supporters of the DACA program were quick to denounce this approach. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus said, “Trump's White House wants to hold DACA recipients hostage in order to force an egregious anti-immigrant agenda,” andCongressman Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) tweeted, “Rumors of Trump deal to sell DREAMers & #DACA for more deportations & border wall... NO DEAL.” More here.
