Trump Supporter Sets Out to Unseat Dem in Florida Swing District
Irina Vilariño, co-owner of Las Vegas Cuban Cuisine restaurants in Miami, announced last week that she is aiming to unseat Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL), who beat Republican Carlos Curbelo in November in a race that was viewed nationally as a referendum on the Republican Party. Vilariño, a staunch Trump supporter, promised to fight for “pro-growth policies that help working families, lower taxes and fewer regulations, a strong national defense, and the protection of our quality of life.” She also stressed her opposition abortion and to the communist regime in Cuban and the Maduro regime in Venezuela. The 43-year-old escaped Cuba with her family as part of the Mariel boatlift in 1980. Last year, Vilariño appeared in a CNN video mocking Dr. Christine Blasey Ford -- who accused now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault when they were in high school. “I am running for Congress because I want to set the record straight that under socialism there is only an equal opportunity to achieve poverty, and I want to remind the liberal extremists that in freedom, every person has the opportunity to achieve the American Dream," said Vilariño. Democrats made up 36% of the district last year while Republicans made up 31%. In 2016, Hillary Clinton took 57% of the vote in the district while Donald Trump took just under 40%. The Democratic House campaign arm, the DCCC, has added Mucarsel-Powell to its “Frontline” program to help targeted incumbents in swing districts. And the House GOP campaign arm, the NRCC, listed Mucarsel-Powell as a top target in 2020 and has already launched attacks on her. More here.
