AOC Warns Dems About Voting Republican
In a closed-door meeting of House Democrats Thursday, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said that she would help liberal activists unseat moderate Democrats who vote with Republicans. What prompted this warning? On Wednesday, 26 Democrats voted with Republicans in amending legislation that was proposed to expand federal background checks for gun purchases -- the amendment added a provision that would require ICE to be notified if an undocumented immigrant tried to buy a gun. “She said that when activists ask her why she had to vote for a gun safety bill that also further empowers an agency that forcibly injects kids with psychotropic drugs, they’re going to want a list of names and she’s going to give it to them,” spokesperson Corbin Trent said. AOC, however, disputes that she had directly threatened her colleagues. She tweeted on Friday that Dems were “inadvertently making a list of targets for the GOP and for progressive advocates” by voting with Republicans. Freshman Congresswoman Xochitl Torres Small (D-NM) responded indirectly and urged her colleagues during the meeting to respect the political reality of representing a swing district with some conservative voters. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), a known vote wrangler, issued a warning of her own. “We are either a team or we’re not, and we have to make that decision,” Pelosi said during the meeting. Meanwhile in NYC, AOC is already being talked about as a potential candidate for Mayor in 2021. Mayor Bill de Blasio is term-limited and can’t run for a third term. NYC has had 109 Mayors and none have been a woman. More here.
