Michelle Obama Headlines Black Girl Festival in London
We told you earlier this month that one of the stops on the second leg of former First Lady Michelle Obama’s book tour would be the UK. That stop has now morphed into a partnership with Black Girl Festival -- an annual one-day festival held in London celebrating all things Black women and girls. To celebrate Forever FLOTUS, as Obama is affectionately known, this year’s event will now be a three-day celebration. The BGF x Becoming Festival will involve talks and workshops inspired by themes from Obama’s memoir. Becoming sold more than 600,000 copies in the UK and placed Obama at the top of the bestseller list over Christmas, making her the first person of color in the UK to ever to claim the top spot. The Festival will also offer attendees workshops, history lessons on Black feminism, creative writing workshops and conversations between Black women within the creative industries. The event was founded by journalist Paula Akpan and curator Nicole Crentsil back in 2017, after a triumphant crowdfunding campaign. Tickets to Obama’s first live appearance in the UK, on December 3rd, sold out within minutes. The BGF x Becoming Festival will take place at Canada Water Library in southeast London from April 9th-11th. More here.
