For years the image of who drives change in our democracy has reflected an old narrative of straight white men in smoky rooms.

The Beat DC blows through that trope.

We’re the only daily political news platform that highlights the people of color driving policy in the nation’s capital and beyond, and the policies that impact communities of color at large.

Michelle Obama Announces New Tour Dates and Moderators

Former First Lady Michelle Obama is kicking off the second leg of her book tour on Friday and has announced a new round of moderators who will join her on the road to discuss her New York Times bestseller, Becoming. The first 2019 stop takes her to Takoma, WA, where she will be joined by Late Night host Jimmy Kimmel. From there, she will head to Portland, OR, where she will be joined by Phoebe Robinson -- a writer, stand-up comic, and co-host of the podcast that became an HBO series, 2 Dope Queens, with Jessica Williams. For her Phoenix, AZ stop, she will reunite with close friend Valerie Jarrett -- the former senior advisor to President Barack Obama and close friend of Michelle -- who will moderate the February 12th tour stop. “I’m thrilled to get back out on the road for this final round of events at home and around the world, and I can’t wait to continue these conversations in new cities and with such extraordinary moderators,” Obama said in a statement. “For me, this tour isn’t just about discussing my memoir—it’s about all of us understanding ourselves and our stories, taking comfort in being together and celebrating our own becoming, no matter where in that process we might be.” Some of the domestic cities she’ll visit this round include Cleveland, OH; Austin, TX, Atlanta, GA; and Nashville, TN, among others. FLOTUS44 is also going global, with planned stops in Oslo, Norway; Montreal, QC; London, UK; Paris, France; Stockholm, Sweden; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Copenhagen, Denmark, among others. Moderators for the remainder of the tour, which is produced by Live Nation, are expected to be announced soon. We’ll keep you posted. In its first week on sale, Becoming sold more than 1.4 million copies. According to Amazon Charts, the memoir was the "most sold on Amazon across all formats for 47 consecutive days," which is the longest streak since Fifty Shades. Another book briefly took the top spot on day 47, Amazon said, but Becoming returned to No. 1 and has stayed there practically ever since. See the full tour dates here.
