John Lewis and Hank Johnson to Boycott SOTU
Georgia Democratic Congressmen John Lewis and Hank Johnson have announced they will be boycotting this year’s State of the Union Address. “I have a problem with defiling the Speaker’s chair in the House of Representatives,” Johnson told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I don’t want to see it lowered, as is what happens when Donald Trump comes to our floor and starts talking about groups of people, particularly Latinos, and disparaging them as a people. ... I’d rather be somewhere else.” Congressmen Steve Cohen (D-TN) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) are also boycotting this year. Fourteen House Democrats -- including Lewis, Blumenauer, and Cohen -- boycotted Trump's SOTU last year. Other key Dems are finding other ways to protest this year’s event, including wearing suffragette white in a message of solidarity with women across the country and by making their priorities clear with their guests to the event.
