ACLU Names National Political Director
Ronald Newman has been named acting National Political Director for the ACLU. He has been with the ACLU since 2017, most recently as Director of Strategic Initiatives, where he helped develop and implement strategic campaigns and other programming within the National Political Advocacy Department, and supported legislative and other advocacy efforts specifically in the areas of immigration and national security. Before joining the ACLU, Newman served as Director of Human Rights and Refugee Protection on the National Security Council in the Obama Administration. Prior to that, he served as an Attorney Advisor in the Legal Advisor’s Office at the U.S. Department of State. The Morehouse College graduate, who holds a law degree from Yale, spent periods of his career living and working in China and in the investment banking sector between degrees. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to guide the ACLU’s political work and continue to build our political power,” said Newman. Regular Beat readers will remember that his predecessor at the ACLU, Faiz Shakir, was named the Campaign Manager of Sanders 2020. More here.
