Thousands Sign Petition to Impeach Michelle Luján Grisham
An online petition seeking to impeach NM Democratic Governor Michelle Luján Grisham for "treason" has over 30,000 signatures. It was created after she announced the withdrawal of about 100 New Mexico National Guard troops from the southern border. Regular Beat readers will recall that Luján Grisham last week rejected Donald Trump’s claim that there is a national security crisis at the border. "We will not militarize the border. We will not use our assets and our National Guard in an inappropriate way,” Luján Grisham said. It seems that her legislative colleagues agree. Democratic NM House Speaker Brian Egolf quashed the idea when asked about impeachment proceedings saying, "no way, forget about it." He holds the authority to initiate House investigations, and an impeachment would require a majority vote of all House members. A Senate trial requires a two-thirds majority to convict. More here.
