For years the image of who drives change in our democracy has reflected an old narrative of straight white men in smoky rooms.

The Beat DC blows through that trope.

We’re the only daily political news platform that highlights the people of color driving policy in the nation’s capital and beyond, and the policies that impact communities of color at large.

Maxine Waters Reclaims Time with Treasury Secretary

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) made the phrase “reclaiming my time” go viral when she last questioned Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. The two are now set to meet again but this time, Waters is Chairing the Financial Services Committee. In December, Treasury announced it was lifting sanctions on three companies tied to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska after he reduced his stake below 50%: aluminum giant Rusal, its holding company EN+ Group and subsidiary ESE. Waters says her committee is in talks with to bring in Mnuchin to testify on this decision. The Treasury Department missed a deadline last week to hand over documents to the Committee explaining its decision to ease sanctions. "What we're going to do is we're going to get Mr. Mnuchin into the committee and ask him real pointed questions about delisting," Waters said. Should Mnuchin hesitate to appear, the Congresswoman has subpoena power that she will likely use. More here.
