Regular Beat readers will recall that former President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance will have its first national convening in Oakland next week, which they are calling MBK Rising! On Tuesday, the organization announced thatKillmonger, otherwise known as Michael B. Jordan, will be among the distinguished guests. He’ll also be joined by Black PantherDirector Ryan Coogler, who is from Oakland. Newly elected Congresswoman Lucy McBath (D-GA), who lost her son Jordan Davis to gun violence, will also participate, joining fellow Mother of the Movement, Sybrina Fulton (mother of Trayvon Martin). Other newly announced guests include former football player Victor Cruz; singer Ledisi; activist Brittany Packnett, and more. We told you last week that NBA player Steph Curry and artist/activist John Legend would be on hand for the convening to celebrate the achievements of organizations and communities leading the way in reducing youth violence, growing impactful mentorship programs, and improving life outcomes for boys and young men of color. The event will include a town hall with Obama and Curry. Mainstage sessions will also cover masculinity and the role women and girls have played in this work and the importance of narrative and storytelling. The event marks the fifth anniversary of the initial launch of My Brother’s Keeper, an initiative started by Obama following the death of Trayvon Martin, which is now part of the Obama Foundation. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and San Francisco Mayor London Breed are co-chairing MBK Rising!’s host committee as part of their My Brother’s Keeper Oakland and My Brother & Sister’s Keeper San Francisco initiatives.
