For years the image of who drives change in our democracy has reflected an old narrative of straight white men in smoky rooms.

The Beat DC blows through that trope.

We’re the only daily political news platform that highlights the people of color driving policy in the nation’s capital and beyond, and the policies that impact communities of color at large.

Former IL Democratic Congressman Luis Gutiérrez and UT Republican Congresswoman Mia Love have joined CNN as commentators. Gutiérrez, a 13-term outspoken Chicago-area native, and Love, who was the only Black Republican woman in the 115th Congress and lost her re-election bid in 2018, appeared together in their first segment on Monday where they went back-and-forth on the government shutdown. They both agreed on one thing: they are more free to speak their minds now. Love said her congressional departure left her with “[n]o restraints, a little untethered is what I say ... Unleashed, and being able to just go out and speak your mind and actually get things done by getting the American public involved.” Meanwhile, Gutiérrez also revealed that he will be working with the National Partnership for New Americans -- a top immigration and green card assistance group. “[I’ll be] going around, traveling the country, doing a lot of what I did without the restraints of having to show up in Congress and vote,” Gutiérrez said. Watch their first appearance here.
