For years the image of who drives change in our democracy has reflected an old narrative of straight white men in smoky rooms.

The Beat DC blows through that trope.

Former FL Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has joined Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP’s DC office as a Senior Advisor in the group’s public law and policy practice. She represented Florida’s 27th Congressional District for nearly 30 years, and was the first Hispanic woman ever to serve in the Florida House, the Florida Senate, and the U.S. Congress. Ros-Lehtinen also served as Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee -- she remains the only woman, to date, to hold that position. “As home to the largest public policy practice in Washington, Akin Gump has always been a successful advocate on behalf of its clients, both domestic and foreign, on trade matters and other critical issues,” said Ros-Lehtinen. “My move here builds so well on the work I have accomplished during my time in Congress, and I am excited to begin this next chapter in my career.” Also joining Akin Gump is former TX Congressman Lamar Smith, who will be a Senior Consultant. More here.
