Chuy García Chief of Staff Resigns Following Sanders Campaign Allegations
Bill Velázquez, the Chief of Staff to newly sworn-in Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (D-IL), on Friday submitted his resignation after a NYT story detailed a couple of instances where he reportedly dismissed a female staffer told him of a surrogate who had allegedly sexually harassed her during the 2016 Bernie Sanders presidential campaign. According to the report, Velázquez “laughed” and said “I bet you would have liked it if he were younger” when Giulianna Di Lauro complained about a surrogate’s behavior. Velázquez, who was a Manager on the Latino outreach team for Sanders, told the NYTthat he did not remember making the remarks, but a third person present confirmed the female staffer’s story. “Congressman García has accepted Bill Velazquez’s resignation as his chief of staff,” said García spokeswoman Fabiola Rodríguez-Ciampoli. “They both agreed that recent media stories that involved Bill had become a distraction from the work the Congressman needs to do for the people of Illinois' 4th Congressional District, and from the work Bill was brought in to do.” More here.
