Julián Castro to Announce 2020 Run Next Week
Julián Castro is expected to formally launch his bid for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination on January 12th in his hometown of San Antonio. Despite mainstream outlets touting Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) as the first to make it clear she intends to run, that’s not so. Castro formed an exploratory committee in December, established a PAC called Opportunity First to help elect left-of-center candidates, and released his memoir, An Unlikely Journey: Waking Up from My American Dream, in October. The former Obama-era HUD Secretary posted a four-minute YouTube speech last month offering a preview of themes he might employ in what could be a long slog for the nomination. "Growing up in Texas, America wasn't just my home, my country, it was also a promise," he said. With Texas moving up their primary to March 3rd, it could certainly impact Castro’s chances as he prepares to compete in a field of potentially more than 20 people. More here.
