For years the image of who drives change in our democracy has reflected an old narrative of straight white men in smoky rooms.

The Beat DC blows through that trope.

Rubén Gallego Considers Run for Senate

Congressman Rubén Gallego (D-AZ) last week met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) Chairwoman Catherine Cortez Masto (NV) at the DSCC’s headquarters about running for the seat that former Senator John McCain’s death left open in 2020. “I’m strongly considering it,” Gallego said. “I’m basically making the final decision and we’ll have that in the next couple weeks.” The former Marine and son of Colombian and Mexican immigrants serves as Senior Whip for the Democratic Caucus, Second Vice Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and Vice Chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. But Gallego is not the only person that Schumer and Cortez Masto met with -- they also spoke with former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords’ husband and astronaut Mark Kelly and former AZ Attorney General Grant Woods. Whoever the Democratic nominee is will likely face current Republican Senator Martha McSally, who was appointed to fill the rest of McCain’s term. We will keep you posted. More here.
