Andrew Gillum Set to Debate Opponent in FL Gubernatorial Race
Florida gubernatorial candidate and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillumpushed his opponent Congressman Ron DeSantis (R-FL) over the weekend to appear on the same stage with him and talk policy. Gillum has accepted invitations from Univisión, Leadership Florida, and CNN. DeSantis said Monday he will debate Gillum “whenever possible.” After Gillum chastised DeSantis on Twitter for having yet to accept any of the invitations, DeSantis responded and upped the ante saying he agreed to five debates hosted by Leadership Florida, CBS Miami, Telemundo, Fox News, and CNN. Gillum's campaign didn't commit to the five, but Geoff Burgan, Gillum's spokesman said "we are pleased that Congressman DeSantis has accepted our offer of three debates. Florida voters deserve to hear from both Mayor Gillum and Congressman DeSantis about their plans for the Sunshine State, and we’re proud to move forward accordingly." The Leadership Florida debate, according to the Gillum campaign, will take place October 24th at Broward College. The CNN debate will be in Tampa, but the date is not yet set. DeSantis left unanswered a third forum Gillum accepted: Univisión 23 in Miami. The conservative Republican, who is proudly running as a spawn of Donald Trump, may have ticked off his benefactor. Politico reports that Trump now views Desantis as profoundly disloyal for distancing himself from the president’s assertion that the Hurricane Maria death toll was inflated by Democrats for political purposes. Trump’s comments unnerved Republicans across Florida -- home to a burgeoning Puerto Rican population. Desantis was not very well known before 45 threw his support behind the candidate. More here.
