Did the NRA Benefit from Russia’s Involvement in the Presidential Election? These Lawmakers Intend to Find Out
Members Norma Torres (D-CA), Grace Meng (D-NY), Grace Napolitano (D-CA), and Hank Johnson (D-GA) introduced the Maria Butina NRA Transparency Act to require the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to investigate whether the NRA benefitted from Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential election. The bill follows the recent indictment of Maria Butina, a Russian national with a long record of gun rights activism and ties to the NRA, for conspiracy to act as an agent of Russia. The bill would require the DNI, in coordination with the Secretaries of State and Treasury, to produce a national intelligence estimate of the total amount of the funds provided to the NRA by the Russian Federation, including funds provided through intermediaries, for the purpose of influencing the 2016 presidential election in the U.S. They would have no more than 180 days after the enactment of the legislation to comply. The lawmakers were joined in introducing the legislation by James P. McGovern (D-MA) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL). More here.
