Hakeem Jeffries Intros New Version of Prison Reform Bill

Hakeem Jeffries Intros New Version of Prison Reform Bill

Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY)and Doug Collins (R-GA) introduced bipartisan legislation on Monday that would send 4,000 prisoners home, allow men and women in prison to earn time in house arrest or halfway homes instead of prison cells, require them to be placed within 500 miles of family, outlaw shackling during childbirth, and mandate the provision of sanitary napkins and tampons to female inmates. The FIRST STEP act is a revamped version of a bill to reform the federal prison system. The bill makes some concessions to progressive groups that have argued the bill is not comprehensive enough. And much to their disappointment, the bill still does not address sentencing reform. The House Judiciary Committee is reportedly scheduled to mark up the legislation on Wednesday. A companion Senate bill will be introduced by Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and John Cornyn (R-TX)More here.
