Will Hiral Tipirneni Take Arizona Special Election?
Hiral Tipirneni (D) is hoping to beat the odds in a special congressional election on April 24th for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District open seat. A new poll of district voters by Emerson College shows Tipirneni leading AZ state Senator Debbie Lesko (R) by a 46-45 margin. Both candidates are looking to replace former Congressman Trent Franks, who represented the area for 15 years before resigning in December due to sexual misconduct allegations. Arizona’s conservative West Valley district is home to an older, predominantly white population -- it voted for Donald Trump by 20 percentage points in 2016. "There's a sleeping giant that's awakening in our district, and people feel like they're being talked to for the first time in a long time," Tipirneni said. And for Tipirneni, the odds of a Democratic upset are strikingly similar to newly minted Congressman Conor Lamb’s victory recent victory in southwest Pennsylvania. We’ll be watching, stay tuned.
