For years the image of who drives change in our democracy has reflected an old narrative of straight white men in smoky rooms.

The Beat DC blows through that trope.

We’re the only daily political news platform that highlights the people of color driving policy in the nation’s capital and beyond, and the policies that impact communities of color at large.

Steph Curry and Viola Davis Executive Producing Documentary on Emanuel Shooting

NBA player Steph Curry has teamed up with Viola Davis to executive produce a documentary about the 2015 Charleston church massacre that left nine people dead at the hands of 21-year-old white supremacist, Dylann Roof. The documentary, Emmanuel, has already been made and premiered in May at the Bentonville Film Festival. It features interviews with survivors of the shooting, as well as members of the 10 affected families. “Emanuel is an incredibly powerful film and we’re honored to come on board as executive producers,” Curry said in a statement. “The documentary highlights how a horrible tragedy can bring a community together, and spreads an important message about the power of forgiveness. Stories like this are the reason we created Unanimous and entered the entertainment space. I hope the film inspires others like it does me.” Roof was sentenced to death in 2017. More here.
