For years the image of who drives change in our democracy has reflected an old narrative of straight white men in smoky rooms.

The Beat DC blows through that trope.

We’re the only daily political news platform that highlights the people of color driving policy in the nation’s capital and beyond, and the policies that impact communities of color at large.

Kamala Harris’ Fundraising Prowess

Kamala Harris’ Fundraising Prowess

There are more than 500 leadership PACs led or controlled by members of Congress, and from January 1, 2017, to September 30, 2018, they raised more than $150 million according to data provided by the Center for Responsive Politics. The top Senate fundraiser was Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA). Her Fearless for the People PAC brought in more than $2.3 million during that period, landing her in the top five of all PACs. She is the second-highest Democrat overall, behind House Democratic Whip Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MA). She has an edge over other potential 2020 Democratic candidates, including her Senate colleagues NJ Senator Cory Booker, who has about $1 million in his leadership PAC; VT Senator Bernie Sanders, who has $370,000 in his leadership PAC; and MA Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has about $590,000 in her leadership PAC. Harris topped former VP Joe Biden; his PAC raised just under $2.3 million this election cycle. Her fundraising power will be crucial if she runs for president in 2020. More here.
