Oprah Presents Award to Toni Morrison
The Center for Fiction announced that Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison will receive a lifetime achievement honor for Excellence in Fiction. She will be presented with the honor by Oprah Winfrey during the December 11th ceremony. Oprah has previously chosen Morrison novels -- Song of Solomon and Paradise -- for her book club reads. She also made her book, Beloved, into a movie in 1998. Also being honored by the Center for Fiction is Ajai Singh "Sonny" Mehta, who will be the recipient of its 2018 Maxwell E. Perkins Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Field of Fiction. Mehta is Editor in Chief of Alfred A. Knopf Publishers. The India-born immigrant is also Chairman of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, which includes Knopf, Doubleday, Nan A. Talese, Pantheon, Schocken, Vintage/Anchor, and Everyman's Library. The Center for Fiction is a nonprofit with a mission to "encourage people to read and value fiction." Proceeds from the Awards Dinner sustain and expand the center’s services including public literary arts performances and fellowships and writing workshops for emerging talent as well as their writing programs for more than 1,000 New York City Public School students each year.
