Editorial Assistant/ The Beat (Freelance)

The Beat DC seeks a self-starting Editorial Assistant, based out of Washington, DC, to support the daily publication as well as contribute to a wide range of operational activities, including content generation and editing, brand-raising, scheduling and coordination, database maintenance, management of the technology platform, event planning, and administrative support for the Managing Editor. This is an opportunity for an emerging journalism professional looking for real-world experience in what it takes to produce a high-quality, well-sourced daily tip sheet, and to get it in front of the right sets of eyes. Our successful candidate will have a high degree of initiative, personal resilience, attention to detail, and intellectual engagement in the subject-matter at hand.

Responsibilities:

  • Project Management: Coordinate scheduling and logistics for Managing Editor, respond to inquiries and requests, track timelines and deliverables;

  • Digital Media: contribute to digital media development including the creation and posting of social media content; handle certain website updates; track and analyze digital analytics, and other online duties.

  • Proofread daily tipsheet and help make edits.

  • Find interesting content and help write copy.

  • Assist with art layout of daily tipsheet.

  • Manage FOMO and Blog section of the tipsheet.

  • Event Management: Assist in the planning, coordination, and staffing of a range of convenings -- salons, panel discussions, receptions, parties, etc. -- intended to raise the visibility and brand of The Beat DC. Tasks may include venue logistics, registrations, marketing and outreach, attendee and speaker communications, on-site support, vendor management, etc.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Requirements:

  • A degree in Journalism, or a comparable mix of education and experience. Minimum 1  year direct experience in the production and publication of news publication to include research, writing, copy editing, and verification.

  • Strong written communications skills, with the ability to quickly write for tone and accuracy, are obviously a must! 

  • Proven project management skills to handle multiple assignments with many moving parts.

  • Ability to work on Sundays, early mornings, and late evenings.

The Beat DC seeks a self-starting Writer/Copyeditor, based out of Washington, DC, to edit copy and contribute content to the daily publication. This is an opportunity for an established journalist looking to join a rapidly growing media start-up with a strong understanding of communities of color and the political issues they face. The successful candidate will have a high degree of initiative, familiarity navigating newsrooms, attention to detail, and intellectual engagement in the subject-matter at hand. 

Responsibilities:

  • Find content and write daily stories consistent with The Beat’s tone;

  • Edit copy of other writers/reporters.

  • Early morning proofread daily tipsheet and help make edits.

  • Assist with art layout of daily tipsheet.

  • Use networking events, social media platforms and other community-building outlets to expand and fortify source base and audience

  • Work collaboratively with other newsroom staffers to maximize impact and accessibility of stories reported

  • Meet or exceed goals related to audience engagement

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Requirements:

  • Experience writing and updating fast moving stories in real time and an ability to clearly explain complex subjects to a wide audience as well as to a politically sophisticated reader.

  • Experience and ability to navigate civil rights, social justice groups focused on communities of color.

  • Understanding of Capitol Hill.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in journalism

  • Proven project management skills to handle multiple assignments with many moving parts.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The Beat DC seeks a motivated and energetic intern to support The Beat DC’s daily operations for the Winter 2019 semester. Our internship opportunity will provide a fast-paced mix of content generation, copy editing, social media management, research, and writing. Our intern will work closely with a small and dynamic team to learn the ropes of producing a high-quality, well-sourced tipsheet that highlights diverse political leaders in the nation's capital, top business leaders of color, and the policies that impact communities of color and beyond.

Our successful intern will have a high degree of initiative, personal resilience, attention to detail, and intellectual engagement in the subject matter at hand.

Responsibilities:

  • Format new calendar items

  • Help manage social media

  • Draft/schedule tweets

  • Research/fact check

  • Color-correct pictures

  • Maintain Excel sheet for new MoC Twitter handles, campaigns, committees, and other government executives

  • Load photos into email platform

  • Update LinkedIn

  • Monitor members of Congress of color for content.

  • Create an editorial calendar highlighting key anniversaries and days relevant to people of color.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge of AP Style and proven experience in short-form/digital journalism;

  • Experience managing Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social platforms for large audiences;

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, early mornings when needed;

  • Working familiarity and ease with Canva and Wordpress or similar CMS platforms;

  • The ability to independently problem-solve technical problems and adapt quickly to new formats, styles, and tone is a must;

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines;

  • Unrelenting attention to detail;

  • Pursuing degree in Journalism, Government, or other related majors;

  • A can-do attitude and interest in politics, government, and minority coverage in the news
